I 'd like to know whether, in order to relieve my iMac internal drive, I can transfer all my 56,000+ pictures (i.e. my PhotosLibrary) to an external SSD (connected by Thunderbolt 3).
I suppose that the Photo application itself should stay in the Applications files but how is it going to manage the transferred pictures?

Yes you can, because you'll tell it where it is:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location.
