Help Inactive mail account

Hi have just upgraded my OS and my mail is trying to repeatedly connect to old inactive exchange email. It is trying 100s of times. I have deleted the account repeatedly but it keeps trying to connect. The email account is an old work one, no access… have asked company to delete which they say they have. Help! Been trying to resolve for some time.

First, Remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support. Then, startup in Safe Mode and see if the issue persists: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.
