Adding a transition in Final Cut

I just upgraded my machine to a Mac mini 2020 Apple M. I started a new project in Final Cut and when I drag and drop a transition onto any of the videos it shows the green plus sign but does not add the transition. How can I get it to add the transition?

Mac mini, macOS 12.3

In 10.6.2 you can no longer drag and drop transitions from the Transitions browser to connected clips, nor to replace a transition in the primary storyline. To apply a transition select the clip or edit point you want to add the transition to, then double click the transition in the browser that you want to add to the project.
