Just about any external drive will work with Time Machine if it is properly formatted for use on Mac.
On pre-Catalina Macs, that format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID partition map. If the disk isn't properly formatted, Time Machine may prompt you to erase it.
You'll want a drive with a capacity 2x-3x your current startup drive.
Many veteran users here will recommend drives and drive enclosures from OWC/Macsales.
You may be tempted to spend $ on an SSD, but that doesn't gain much performance from Time Machine in its day to day ops.
On your Ventura OS Mac, APFS is the preferred drive format.
