I have a G5 with installed older Photoshop and illustrator CS programs.
I need to update to OSX 10.5 to use a new Epson Et-8550 printer software. If I upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5 will it cause these programs to erase or fail? I also need to know where to get the update safely. Thank you in advance.

It is not about the files you now have on your drive but rather Adobe's activiation procedures. If they have taken down the activation servers for your old version of CS, you will not be able to us teht eht computer at all for CS if Adobe thinks a macOS upgrade requires reactivation.
I encountered this with a G4 MDD that needed a new hard drive and was not able to reactivate CS2.

If you upgrade your computer, you shouldn't lose any data. It is always a good idea to make a backup for safety. If you can't do this, you can partition your drive, upgrade the other partition to Mac OS X 10.5, then move the files over or run them directly from the other partition. In terms of upgrading your Mac to 10.5, it is very hard to upgrade Macs with software burned to disks or USB drives. I have personally tried to use USBs, but the computer fails to boot. I have also talked with people at Apple who worked on Mac OS X versions like these, and they said that they make it very hard to upgrade without a physical disk. Your best bet is to buy a disk from a website online.
