Can I recover lost messages from iCloud backup on iPhone?

I know this has been asked before but I’m hoping Apple has got it together so I can figure this out. I am needing a way to either find old backups (1 year ago exactly) or find a way to restore erased messages that were erased and backed up over. The phone is the same iPhone and has had iCloud backup on. I don’t see why Apple has made it nearly impossible to restore our own messages, none the less why can’t I view my own text records?! I can’t get a subpoena but seriously need them.
