21 Honda CRV Apple CarPlay issues

Brand new 21 CRV. I’ve been having Apple CarPlay connection issues since day 1. It originally connected, then suddenly disconnected, then lost. I’ve tried the various fixes. Unplug and plug back the USB, remove and reconnect iPhone connection. Tried various cables. A reset holding the power button worked once. I also did the actual reset to factory too. It works intermittently, so frustrating!

Its definitely buggy. You would think by now Honda and Apple would have this working flawlessly!!

Has anyone actually found a permanent fix? Does any Honda owner actually have an ongoing stable connection experience with their iPhone and Apple CarPlay? If yes, please share your iPhone model, iOS, any solutions you may have found. Thanks.

I have an iPhone X, with iOS 14.3.

Found 3 things that in combination made it work again!

  • CarPlay settings - allow CarPlay when phone is locked
  • Face ID & Passcode - allow USB Accessories
  • Reboot the CRV system by holding down the Volume knob until you get the ‘reboot’ command.

Worked for me as follows - before starting the car, removed USB cable, settings in phone adjusted as above, rebooted CRV system. Mine is working again after a few very annoying weeks.

It doesn’t help.

I’ve done those steps.

So tonight, Apple CarPlay starts off ok on my trip, 45 minutes into the drive, Apple CarPlay suddenly disconnects, vanishes off the CRV screen, it goes to playing music on Bluetooth.

The Apple CarPlay icon disappears, I lose my maps. I try connecting and disconnecting USB cable, I tried rebooting phone, it was not recognized.

Am I expected to pull off the highway, turn off the car, reboot everything to get it back online? It doesn’t work every time even doing that.

This is very disappointing.

Please fix, or test, specifically the connections with a 21 Honda CRV.

Same exact problems as AppManCan. INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING.

I've tried all the same fixes and it still disappears, stops working, blacks out, etc. in a seemingly undeterminable way.

I can still hit the menu button on the console and scroll around through the Honda Interface, but clicking on CarPlay just results in a black screen or nothing. Unplugging and then plugging back in doesn’t work either… the Honda Interface indicates that CarPlay is connected (whether plugged in or not) and pressing on the CarPlay icon yields an error message telling me to connect the phone to the USB outlet (whether it is plugged in or not).  The only things I've tried that will "solve" (read temporarily reset) the problem is to turn the car off, open and close the door, restart, and then plug the phone back in OR reboot my phone and the audio interface/ center console.   Obviously none of these are acceptable solutions, and they only work for a while until the problem repeats itself. tip

I'm using an apple USB-to-lightning cable, not a third party cable.

I have a similar issue with a 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E. I plug in my phone (12Pro) and sometimes it won't even recognize the phone. But it will still hook up to bluetooth. Other times I will get a call and after the call YouTube Music doesn't start back after the call ends. You have to manually force it to play. When this happens sometimes you can't get it to play no matter what you do. I have tried various things to get it to work again. Nothing seems to work. I have done a test a couple of times when this happens to try and see if it is the phone or the radio. It seems to be the radio. Because I can hit the home button and go back to play XM or FM radio and it won't play anything. It's like the radio is stuck in a loop and won't let go of the connection. I've tried unplugging the phone and reconnecting. But it still doesn't work. I've tried turning off wifi calling and Bluetooth. Nothing seems to work. I have called Honda about the issue and they said they have never heard of this issue. I replied to them "Well now you have. So what can be done?" They are now having a engineer look at the problem. I also made a video of the problem when it was happening and how you can't even change audio sources when it goes nuts. Hopefully this will give them something to start on and resolve the issue.

I’m following this. I brought a brand new 2020 CR-V in December. CarPlay worked perfectly in my 2017 CR-V and still works perfectly in my wife’s 2019 CR-V. But it’s never worked in my new car. It might work for two minutes or half an hour. It disconnects randomly, for example if I use the turn signal or if a podcast ends. The only way to reconnect is to stop the car, turn it off and turn it back on. Finally the Ottawa Honda dealership told me in March that the manufacturer was aware of the problem and was working on a fix. As of June there is still no fix. This is extremely frustrating. It’s a Honda problem, not an Apple problem.

Similar problem since day 1 of purchasing my car. Took car to dealer service dept, they fiddled with the software & the system malfunctioned the 2nd time I drove my car after that. Took my car in again.

The Dealer Service Dept. staff called Honda tech people and they claim this is a software problem, not a Honda problem. Their explanation:

  1. An app is interfering with the audio system & causes problems.
  2. These problems are recorded as errors in the cache.
  3. When there are too many errors, the cache gets overloaded.
  4. Owners must empty the cache by navigating to settings > system > reset.

Unfortunately for us:

  1. They could not say which "apps" are causing the problem (i.e. it's not their problem.)
  2. Some of us will have to empty the cache every couple of days.

Given how quickly my system malfunctioned after they reset the software, my suspicion is that the malfunctioning app is Apple CarPlay itself.

Given the multitude of similar complaints online, I'm very disappointed that Apple hasn't come up with a fix.

Update: Nearly 1 year later, I still experience daily issues. iPhone 12 Max Pro iOS 15.1, 21 Black Edition CRV - Canada.

  • randomly disconnects
  • reboot required often
  • slow response
  • Ive ensured no VPN running on phone
  • used genuine cables
  • My unit was replaced once by dealer

has anyone found a solution that works besides ‘rebooting’?

Hey AppManCan,

Thanks for getting back with that info. Make sure there is nothing causing interference as this could contribute to the disconnecting - Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

If that doesn’t help, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > (stereo name) and forget the device. Then forget your iPhone from the car stereo. Go to Settings > General > About > Name and rename your iPhone. Then reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before.

Set up CarPlay once more and see if the issue is resolved.

Kind regards.

Resetting the head unit in my 2021 Honda Accord EX-L did the trick after wireless Carplay stopped connecting after IOS 15 update on Monday. Here's the instructions that worked for me, your model may be different.

Note current uptime:

Start car and visit this infotainment screen - Settings/System/About/Status - note the current "Up time"

Perform the reboot:

  1. Turn off car
  2. Perform the following in rapid procession:
  3. Foot on brake - turn on car - shift to reverse - shift to neutral (all this should occur well before the Honda logo appears on the display)
  4. When system boots, the "Ok" button should be grayed-out. This indicates the system is rebooting.

Verify reboot:

Once the system restarts, visit this infotainment screen - Settings/System/About/Status - and note the current "Up time" - It should show an up-time indicative of a recent system reboot.

On the connection tab of your system menu, select WiFi*** not the Bluetooth option****

Go to your phone settings and turn your wifi on.

The wireless function of your carplay connection is via WiFi. This should show up on the list of available WiFi connection on your phone. Something like “adcar***”. This will pair up your phone successfully to your car.

*** The Bluetooth function will allow you to connect to your car for music and phone calls only, but not for CarPlay. If you lose your connection again, it will be because your WiFi pairing disconnected. Repeat these steps. No need to reset your car to reconnect. See included pictures for reference.
