21 Honda CRV Apple CarPlay issues

Brand new 21 CRV. I’ve been having Apple CarPlay connection issues since day 1. It originally connected, then suddenly disconnected, then lost. I’ve tried the various fixes. Unplug and plug back the USB, remove and reconnect iPhone connection. Tried various cables. A reset holding the power button worked once. I also did the actual reset to factory too. It works intermittently, so frustrating!

Its definitely buggy. You would think by now Honda and Apple would have this working flawlessly!!

Has anyone actually found a permanent fix? Does any Honda owner actually have an ongoing stable connection experience with their iPhone and Apple CarPlay? If yes, please share your iPhone model, iOS, any solutions you may have found. Thanks.

I have an iPhone X, with iOS 14.3.

Found 3 things that in combination made it work again!

  • CarPlay settings - allow CarPlay when phone is locked
  • Face ID & Passcode - allow USB Accessories
  • Reboot the CRV system by holding down the Volume knob until you get the ‘reboot’ command.

Worked for me as follows - before starting the car, removed USB cable, settings in phone adjusted as above, rebooted CRV system. Mine is working again after a few very annoying weeks.

I am still troubleshooting and monitoring this.

I am also tracking this issue here:

https://www.crvownersclub.com/threads/apple-carplay-issues.215714/

i did try disabling the Bluetooth, but Apple CarPlay still disconnected.

I also disabled Apple Maps (as one time it auto popped up on my phone display, ‘you are 30 minutes’ from home, on Apple maps, even though I was using Waze on CarPlay.

I am wondering if it is the Waze map, with the split view. Then perhaps an alert from another app on my phone caused a disconnect. I haven’t nailed down the issue yet. I did try google maps instead of waze on CarPlay and made it home with no disconnect. But I’m not certain if it’s that yet. Haven’t driven much lately, will keep monitoring this. Keep the ideas coming. Thx

I have this issue in my 2019 Accord. Worked great for over a year, and then started occurring intermittently. I have tried all the suggestions too. I have tried different cables, different iPhones, etc. Sometimes just starts working on it's own and sometimes will start working after the car is turned off and back on. No real pattern.

I have not made the connection to Maps or Waze however. I have had this fail with no applications running. Have had it fail multiple times when dialed into a MS TEAMS conference call. Very frustrating and Honda does not seem to think they have any responsibility here. Any insight appreciated.

Yes it’s very frustrating.

I have yet to have a trip with Apple CarPlay not giving me issues.

I wish this could be troubleshooted further, like Apple, can you check a diagnostic on the iPhone as to why it suddenly crashes on the phone side.

I have an iPhone X, OS 14.4.

I do wonder if it’s my phone, my son seems to have less problems with his XR.

I also wonder if something else running on my phone that I’m aware of is causing this issue.

I consider myself a power user, I am in IT too, and am used to troubleshooting things .

a diagnostic report from the phone on what may have caused the disconnect/crash would be helpful. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Otherwise it’s the Honda Head Unit, many many reports of issues.

Who is the culprit??!??

Spoke to Apple support today for 1.5 hours. Did a diagnostic ‘my phone is working fine’, ok, well, something is not working. They’ve suggested I speak to Honda, and follow up again with Apple if needed. It seems to disconnect/crash around the 20 minute mark, but it’s not always consistent.

Wish this worked flawlessly. Unfortunately it hasn’t. I am a fairly advanced user and in IT, and I haven’t been able to figure it out, I’ve tried everything from a user perspective. Something is wrong somewhere....

Same problems as many in this string describe. I have an iPhone 12 running iOS 14.4 plugged into 2020 Honda Ridgeline. Very flaky operation. Only different observation I’ve made is the Bluetooth, USB, power, iPhone name and other symbols cycle on and off constantly when the phone is “not recognized” on the Car Play screen.

2021-02-25 - Brought 21 Honda CRV to dealer, reported the Apple CarPlay issues.

They said first my car does not support Bluetooth 5.0... hmmm.. but CarPlay uses the USB wired connection....

Their fix was, reset/reboot, disconnect and reconnect battery power.... basically a reboot.

It worked on the way home, for about 10 minutes.... then suddenly disappears.

As per the same result when I manually reboot the CRV Head-unit, it works for a little while, 5-10 minutes, then, boom - it crashes... Apple CarPlay option goes missing, will not reconnect with a USB disconnect/reconnect, need to reboot the whole head unit.. every time... what the heck Honda/Apple!!!! Fix this please!

I changed my iPhone X to an iPhone 12 Max Pro - yesterday - SAME ISSUES! Dang.

I was really hoping this would fix things, it hasn’t. Apple CarPlay will suddenly crash / disappear on my 21 CRV Black Edition, and doesn’t come back without rebooting head unit.

Went to dealer for a fix last week, but nothing was actually fixed. I do think it’s likely a Honda CRV head unit issue... which is very frustrating.

Hey AppManCan. I'm unfamiliar with the 2021 CRV, but does it have wireless Carplay?

I have a 2018 CRV EXL AWD and CP worked great for a while then started showing some of the symptoms you are describing. I did a factory reset of the head unit and those issues stopped. iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14.4, hard wired. (bought a wireless adapter but that's another story) Seems strange using Carplay on an Android head unit.

The solution posted here (with the blue background from Bob A) worked for me:

https://www.vehiclehistory.com/questions/why-is-my-honda-crv-apple-carplay-not-working-127467

I spent an hour resetting everything i could reset on my phone, removing bluetooth devices, etc. etc.

After i'd finally thrown in the towel i tried one more search and the link i posted above solved my problem in less than 30 seconds.

If only i'd found it first! Hope this saves you all some time and frustration.

Hi,

thanks for posting, but ...

It is a temporary fix, but the problem keeps coming back for me. I’ve done both the factory reset and Bluetooth disconnect.

I now have an iPhone Pro Max 12 256 GB, Apple Music, I have 2,000 songs on my device.

It just feels like sometimes the Honda head unit cannot handle all of the songs, almost as if there might be a limit until it crashes. Perhaps it’s trying to load the library each time and it’s just too big. That is only one of my theories.
