21 Honda CRV Apple CarPlay issues

Brand new 21 CRV. I’ve been having Apple CarPlay connection issues since day 1. It originally connected, then suddenly disconnected, then lost. I’ve tried the various fixes. Unplug and plug back the USB, remove and reconnect iPhone connection. Tried various cables. A reset holding the power button worked once. I also did the actual reset to factory too. It works intermittently, so frustrating!

Its definitely buggy. You would think by now Honda and Apple would have this working flawlessly!!

Has anyone actually found a permanent fix? Does any Honda owner actually have an ongoing stable connection experience with their iPhone and Apple CarPlay? If yes, please share your iPhone model, iOS, any solutions you may have found. Thanks.

I have an iPhone X, with iOS 14.3.

Found 3 things that in combination made it work again!

  • CarPlay settings - allow CarPlay when phone is locked
  • Face ID & Passcode - allow USB Accessories
  • Reboot the CRV system by holding down the Volume knob until you get the ‘reboot’ command.

Worked for me as follows - before starting the car, removed USB cable, settings in phone adjusted as above, rebooted CRV system. Mine is working again after a few very annoying weeks.

I am convinced that this is a Honda issue, not an Apple issue, because I have had this problem with both CarPlay (Apple XR) and using Android Auto (Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G) in my 2020 CR-V. The Apple would cut on and off. My Android was just three days old and it started doing the same and then just completely stopped connecting. I took it into Honda twice. The first time, they were able to get Apple CarPlay to work with a technician's phone, so they were convinced it was my problem. I told them to test it with an Android, and lo and behold, it didn't work for them. They did a computer reboot and it worked. Not 48 hours later, it stopped working again. I went back to the dealership and they looked at it again. This time, they claimed to have tested it with "multiple" iPhones and Androids and also talked to Honda headquarters. In essence, I was told there was something wrong with my phone, not the Honda system, and there was nothing more they could do. They gave me a list of things to try, most of which was ridiculous, but I tried them all out before leaving the dealership and the Android still wouldn't connect. I went back to the iPhone that afternoon. By the next morning, it was back to having connectivity issues, too. I'll be trying another Honda dealership next. If that fails, I'm not sure what else to do, but there's no excuse for having an 8-month-old car with a feature that hasn't worked correctly from day 1.

I have a 2021 Civic Touring and my problems started after loading 14.4 on my IPhone X. After checking everything out (Cables, Settings, Pairings, ……….) I replaced the phone with a 12 Max Pro and the same thing!! Honda/Apple (👉🏻/👈🏻) I have tried my phone on about every other make of vehicle with Car Play and I am Absolutely Astonished that I have NOT had a single issue!! (Well Played Apple!!) I currently drive down the road and when it drops out of Car Play I reach down and unplug then replace the USB cable in the console and it works again for an unspecified amount of time. Honda needs to PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR ***** AND GET THIS REMEDIED ASAP!!

2021-02-25 - Brought 21 Honda CRV to dealer, reported the Apple CarPlay issues.

They said first my car does not support Bluetooth 5.0... hmmm.. but CarPlay uses the USB wired connection....

Their fix was, reset/reboot, disconnect and reconnect battery power.... basically a reboot.

It worked on the way home, for about 10 minutes.... then suddenly disappears.

As per the same result when I manually reboot the CRV Head-unit, it works for a little while, 5-10 minutes, then, boom - it crashes... Apple CarPlay option goes missing, will not reconnect with a USB disconnect/reconnect, need to reboot the whole head unit.. every time... what the heck Honda/Apple!!!! Fix this please!

I changed my iPhone X to an iPhone 12 Max Pro - yesterday - SAME ISSUES! Dang.

I was really hoping this would fix things, it hasn’t. Apple CarPlay will suddenly crash / disappear on my 21 CRV Black Edition, and doesn’t come back without rebooting head unit.

Went to dealer for a fix last week, but nothing was actually fixed. I do think it’s likely a Honda CRV head unit issue... which is very frustrating.

Hey AppManCan. I'm unfamiliar with the 2021 CRV, but does it have wireless Carplay?

I have a 2018 CRV EXL AWD and CP worked great for a while then started showing some of the symptoms you are describing. I did a factory reset of the head unit and those issues stopped. iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14.4, hard wired. (bought a wireless adapter but that's another story) Seems strange using Carplay on an Android head unit.

April 27 2021 - Update to my 21 Honda CRV - Black Edition - CarPlay Issues - ongoing

I finally convinced Honda to replace the head unit - infotainment unit. It was replaced today - with a brand new unit - at the Honda dealer with a new one, same screen however. Driving home, I tested it, I used the phone on Apple CarPlay - and the person I was speaking to said I sounded like an alien, and it was not clear.

It started off ok listening to music etc. Then during the call this time - Apple CarPlay crashed :( lost the connection like what has been happening since day 1. This is with an apparent brand new head unit. What the heck. Today I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max with the updated iOS 14.5. Like seriously. Why doesn't this work. Am I the only one??? So frustrating.

It's pretty straightforward. I found out how to do it online (https://www.vehiclehistory.com/questions/what-is-the-honda-crv-radio-reset-procedure-108350):

In order to reset the radio on Your Honda CR-V You'll first need to give the vehicle power but leave the engine off. Now You'll want to turn on the radio for 10 seconds and then turn the radio off. Now turn on the radio again but this time hold down the power button for several seconds. You will see a code pop up on Your screen. This is code will now need to be entered in to the radio using the present numbers that are located on it.

I've done this a few times, plus I've reset my phone, but still have the same issue with my iPhone. It disconnects randomly. There's a software issue that I really hope gets resolved soon.
