21 Honda CRV Apple CarPlay issues

Brand new 21 CRV. I’ve been having Apple CarPlay connection issues since day 1. It originally connected, then suddenly disconnected, then lost. I’ve tried the various fixes. Unplug and plug back the USB, remove and reconnect iPhone connection. Tried various cables. A reset holding the power button worked once. I also did the actual reset to factory too. It works intermittently, so frustrating!

Its definitely buggy. You would think by now Honda and Apple would have this working flawlessly!!

Has anyone actually found a permanent fix? Does any Honda owner actually have an ongoing stable connection experience with their iPhone and Apple CarPlay? If yes, please share your iPhone model, iOS, any solutions you may have found. Thanks.

I have an iPhone X, with iOS 14.3.

Found 3 things that in combination made it work again!

  • CarPlay settings - allow CarPlay when phone is locked
  • Face ID & Passcode - allow USB Accessories
  • Reboot the CRV system by holding down the Volume knob until you get the ‘reboot’ command.

Worked for me as follows - before starting the car, removed USB cable, settings in phone adjusted as above, rebooted CRV system. Mine is working again after a few very annoying weeks.

From Honda:

Hello.

It is unfortunately impossible to diagnose by correspondence the symptoms you have noticed while using CarPlay in your CR-V.

The basic procedure will be to check multiple phones in your car and evaluate their operation. If only some of them are developing abnormal symptoms, this is not considered to be a vehicle problem or defect. In addition, the same tests should be also performed with a sister vehicle, to determine(with accuracy) if these issues are related to your CR-V, or to any other ones (there is also a strong possibility that such occurrence is due to the phone software too).

If necessary, the dealership can contact our technical department for further assistance if needed, including a potential part replacement.

The Dealership apparently did contact Honda. Dealer gave me a piece of paper with Honda number... it’s just going in circles.

CarPlay still randomly crashes, disconnects, and can’t get back without a reboot. I lose the maps, the music. So frustrating.

Did your dealership check the head unit firmware?

Typically, head unit firmware can be updated with a USB flash drive.

For example...

PS: If you are not getting the full advertised functionality of the vehicle and you are getting nowhere with the dealership and company, it may also be time to consult a lemon law attorney.

April 27 2021 - Update to my 21 Honda CRV - Black Edition - CarPlay Issues - ongoing

I finally convinced Honda to replace the head unit - infotainment unit. It was replaced today - with a brand new unit - at the Honda dealer with a new one, same screen however. Driving home, I tested it, I used the phone on Apple CarPlay - and the person I was speaking to said I sounded like an alien, and it was not clear.

It started off ok listening to music etc. Then during the call this time - Apple CarPlay crashed :( lost the connection like what has been happening since day 1. This is with an apparent brand new head unit. What the heck. Today I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max with the updated iOS 14.5. Like seriously. Why doesn't this work. Am I the only one??? So frustrating.

I have a 2020 CRV and my Apple car play was working just fine until i updated to iOS 14.5. Now the screen disappears, i can’t even launch Apple Music app on my phone when connected to the car- it acts like the app is going to launch and then closes. Seems to be iOS glitch as i did not have any issues until recently. Honda dealer gave me some tips that I’ve tried but Nothing helps. I have an iPhone 12Pro Max running 14.5.1.

The infotainment system in the CR-V and Civic are terrible and buggy. Apple CarPlay glitches are growing in ahi da Infotainment systems. I just spoke with a Honda service representative when I dropped my car off for scheduled maintenance and he told me that it’s a known problem that is increasing and that Honda is working on an update. I am on iOS 14.5.1 and all my Apple CarPlay maladies got worse and worse over the course of 3 weeks to the point that Apple Music won’t launch and just crashes.

Thanks for sharing.

My issues continue it’s June 16 2021 - I bought the car Dec 1 2020.

Same issues.

You would think someone somewhere has figured out what the problem is,

if it’s another app interfering, if it’s the Honda Software, if it’s the Honda USB connector.

I would say I am a power user - lots of apps, songs, things on my phone. But it’s not just my iPhone 12 Pro Max 256 phone, it’s my sons iPhone XR phone that does similar issues.

Come on Honda and Apple!

I don't think that's it. My problem is with podcasts, not music - or at least that's what I'm listening to when it just randomly disconnects. It makes my car stereo completely useless, plus my phone is useless when I'm in the car - if I use it for directions, it's illegal for me to be looking at my phone while I drive.

It's pretty straightforward. I found out how to do it online (https://www.vehiclehistory.com/questions/what-is-the-honda-crv-radio-reset-procedure-108350):

In order to reset the radio on Your Honda CR-V You'll first need to give the vehicle power but leave the engine off. Now You'll want to turn on the radio for 10 seconds and then turn the radio off. Now turn on the radio again but this time hold down the power button for several seconds. You will see a code pop up on Your screen. This is code will now need to be entered in to the radio using the present numbers that are located on it.

I've done this a few times, plus I've reset my phone, but still have the same issue with my iPhone. It disconnects randomly. There's a software issue that I really hope gets resolved soon.

Thank you. FYI, in between posting my original message and now I turned the phone off and on, wiped all of the previous pairings that I'd had on my phone, and tried CarPlay again. As soon as I plugged in this time, it was connected. Very glitchy, either on the phone or on the car, but one way or the other, I wish it would be fixed. I bought a new car specifically so that I could use CarPlay (had a perfectly good 2016 that didn't have it) and it's very frustrating that it's so temperamental!
