MacBook Air M1 waking from sleep

I updated the MacBook Air M1 to the latest version of Big Sur as part of setting up the laptop.

After updating, the wake feature on opening the laptop only works intermittent. On first opening it does not wake up although the keyboard lights up. I press the on switch and nothing! If I close and open again it wakes up. This happens every time that I close the lid.

I have nothing attached to the laptop.

Any ideas how to fix this. Is it a bug or something I can address n the settings?
