Monterey installation problem

hi, I have iMac late 2015 that has not had os update since el capitain. Trying to install Monterey. Been showing grey spinning wheel on screen for 12 hours now. Backed everything up prior. Was fine until this. Any thoughts on next steps appreciated. Shouldn’t take this long.

You may have some third party software installed that is interfering with the normal operation of macOS. Typical culprits are anti-virus software, cleaning apps, and third party security software none of which are needed on a Mac. You can try booting into Safe Mode to see if the macOS installer will work.

Another option if you have enough free storage space is to create a bootable macOS USB installer using the instructions in this Apple article:

Keep in mind installing macOS using a bootable macOS USB installer requires about another 10GB of free storage space.
