Exit the workout app in Watch series 7

I am new to Apple watch. I plan to use the workout app to keep track of my laps while swimming. While at home, I went through the motions of setting up a swim just to see how it works. Now I cannot get out of the app. I have tried everything I have read about including pressing the digital crown, turning the digital crown, swiping right (I have tried swiping every way), and force touching. Nothing works; the app just stays in its paused state and I cannot figure out how to unpause or exit the app. Thank you in advance!
