Black screen on Mac, pressing power button show 0% battery.

Hi Community,

Sometimes when I open my Mac(MacBook pro 2017) for login, it shows Black screen. Pressing power button to restart show 0% battery. When I connected power and restarted it battery shows 75%, and everything works as usual. This has happend multiple time, frequency is around once in one/two months. Has anybody experienced this issue?

My mack was in sleep state, to start with.

Any help/pointer is appreciated.

Thanks,

MacBook Pro 13″

Yes, I've noticed this happening with our organization's USB-C MBPros. I have found these USB-C Macs have some quirky behavior especially related to power & battery.

Try an SMC Reset.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

When this happens, quickly check the battery condition by Option-clicking on the battery icon on the menu bar as soon as you boot to the Desktop. It may also be a good time to try running the Apple Diagnostics instead of booting into macOS. I find the best time to discover battery issues is when the battery charge level is around 10% or less. It is much more likely that the battery condition will show as "Service Recommended" or the Apple Diagnostics are more likely to report a battery failure.

You do have a 2017 model and even if it was purchased was purchased as late as 2019, there is a good chance the battery may be starting to fail. Sometimes it can be difficult in determining if this issue is just quirky behavior or an actual hardware issue. I suspect that the battery becomes "disconnected" from the Logic Board. Since I have seen this happen with brand new Apple OEM batteries, I suspect an issue in the Logic Board's power/battery circuitry. Most of the time this is just an annoyance I have noticed while supporting our organization's thousands of laptops since the end user is not reporting these issues to us. I just ignore them if everything else is Ok and it does not happen all the time while I'm working on the laptop.

Thanks for such a detailed answer. Yes, My mack is 2017 model, bought in late 2018.

May be I was not very clear about the state of my Mac when above describe issue happens. Here is some clarification.

1) The above describe issue happens only when I open My Mac for login. Previous state : Mac is in sleep state.

2) Since Mac battery is 0%, I can't turn it on. System is reading the battery state incorrectly, in reality battery is not 0%.

3) When I connect power and turn it on immediately, Battery shows ~75%, this is actual battery state.

4) I believe System was turned off, because it was reading the battery state(0%) incorrectly.

I tried running the Mac Diagnostic, I got error code PPF003, Possible Fan issue.

Next time I will try to run the Mac Diagnostic when this Happens.

Thanks for All the suggestion.
