I am struggling to convert mov file to mp4 on Mac. I have tried multiple methods, including using the built-in QuickTime Player, but the resulting video is either poor quality or distorted. I am looking for a reliable and efficient way to convert my video without losing quality. Any solutions or recommendations of software that I can use on my Mac would be greatly appreciated.

That makes no sense at all. There is no 'modify' on a duplicate icon. It is exact same; thus, 'duplicate'.
This is extremely frustrating. I am working with a late 2015 mac air that can't download imovie (even an older version for some reason). Making a duplicate of a 12 second video from my iphone and right clicking duplicate does not work. There is no 'modify'. Seriously, can't iphone make something compatible with mp4 out the gate without all this frustrating time to no avail?

Try a Different User.
Create an Administrator user on your Mac, and see if that makes all the difference.

Same here I changed it through iMovie
Turns out you can rename the file and change ".mov" to ".mp4" and that converts it.
