Vertical Lines on my iPhone 16 Pro Max display

I have been experiencing some weird glitches on the display: for a fraction of a second, I can see vertical line appearing on the screen which looks a bit like interference that is caused by a magnetic field. This happens 2-3 times a day. I thought it may have been the issue with the hardware so I exchanged my iPhone 16 pro max but I have been seeing the same on the new phone. Is it possible that the hardware on both phones is botched or is it something iOS related?

Walked in at the Apple Store on 57th street 5th Ave today. Explained the issue and had my screen replaced within 1 hour. They confirmed this is a hardware problem with the display.

suggest you take it to an apple store.

Absolutely yes, in my case the issue is related to the 5G connection. Despite airplane mode (which is supposed to disable all types of cellular connections), try setting the cellular data network to 4G only. In any case, I tend to think that the problem is more related to radio frequency interference rather than the display (or the eSIM, as these could also cause the issue, even when using 4G).

I still experienced them in 18.3. Go a few days without restarting your phone and you'll see them. I'm pretty sure it's a software issue where there is some graphical degradation over time the longer the phone is up without a reboot. There have been several graphical issues like this with animations in the past. I've been on 18.3.1 since yesterday. No issues yet but I usually start seeing it after about 2 days of uptime.

I have been experiencing the brief vertical lines on the lower 3rd of the screen ever since I got the phone in the fall. I know others have had more severe instances but I'm talking about what the original poster was mentioning. It would usually take about 2-3 days of using the phone without rebooting before it started happening. And then, once it did, it was several times a day. I hope I'm not jinxing myself here, but I have not seen this since the release of 18.3.1. I've only rebooting my phone once since 18.3.1 was released and it has not happened even once that I've noticed. Anyone else no longer seeing it in 18.3.1?

I preordered my 16 pro max and have had the same issue since i got it. I even contacted apple support and the ran diagnostics and said they didn’t see anything wrong but left a note on my account that it was happening. I have not noticed it happen since I turned off the always on display, possibly a software glitch with that? glad to know i’m not alone at least

I reported this to AppleCare just to inform them as well as create a ticket so-to-speak for future reference; should the problem continue. They had no systemic issue for any recall. I was told to conduct any updates as bug fixes would be in them. I did update to iOS 18.2 and it appears the issue is resolved however, just this morning I swear I saw that telltale glitch happen again. I’ll have to keep an eye on it. Another thing I noticed is since the iOS 18.2 update a few game apps glitched. One of them an Apple Arcade game. So that shouldn’t have happened. The screen would freeze during a particular part and I would have to swipe it out and start again. A rep at the Apple Store suggested I may have to delete and reinstall those apps, but first I was told to do a hard reboot by pressing the volume up once, then volume down followed by holding the sleep/silence button until seeing the Apple logo. The latter part takes longer than usual. So I did everything except deleting and reinstalling the apps in question, yet still, this morning, I swear I saw that glitch. It’s a wait and see thing now. If all else fails I might have to do a full restore, but I’m not going there yet.

Absolutely agree with you! It should work seamlessly but it has not been even after I asked to exchange the first unit I received with the new one. And yours is yet another diagnosis offered by Apple: I have never heard about any ‚dead zone’ on the screen (so far most of the people have been told it is a software issue). I am not quite sure this has been taken seriously by the company as the problem (which is super annoying) has not been affecting enough users. The moment I stop using always on display, the issue disappears but is this the solution? Not really: I would like my phone to be fully functional.

I am having the same issue and it got worse with iOS 18.4. I really wish there was a fix other than turning off always on display (only thing that seems to help).

That's what a one year warranty is for. If you're having such an issue, why you're here on this user to user only forum, where no one Apple participates and NOT in your closest Apple Store, showing the phone to them doesn't make sense. If you have an issue, take advantage of the warranty and show it to Apple.

I am fairly sure that most of us who are frustrated with the problem find your comment quite useless. We would rather hear from Apple support than from someone who I recon doesn’t have to deal with the issue.

That's the point. This is a user to user only forum. Apple doesn't participate here, so if you want to hear from anyone at Apple it will NEVER happen from posting here. You can consider my comment useless, but since you clearly don't know you are only addressing other users, none of whom work for Apple, maybe what I posted isn't useless after all? Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar if you want help from Apple. You won't get it here.
