21 Honda CRV Apple CarPlay issues

Brand new 21 CRV. I’ve been having Apple CarPlay connection issues since day 1. It originally connected, then suddenly disconnected, then lost. I’ve tried the various fixes. Unplug and plug back the USB, remove and reconnect iPhone connection. Tried various cables. A reset holding the power button worked once. I also did the actual reset to factory too. It works intermittently, so frustrating!

Its definitely buggy. You would think by now Honda and Apple would have this working flawlessly!!

Has anyone actually found a permanent fix? Does any Honda owner actually have an ongoing stable connection experience with their iPhone and Apple CarPlay? If yes, please share your iPhone model, iOS, any solutions you may have found. Thanks.

I have an iPhone X, with iOS 14.3.

Found 3 things that in combination made it work again!

  • CarPlay settings - allow CarPlay when phone is locked
  • Face ID & Passcode - allow USB Accessories
  • Reboot the CRV system by holding down the Volume knob until you get the ‘reboot’ command.

Worked for me as follows - before starting the car, removed USB cable, settings in phone adjusted as above, rebooted CRV system. Mine is working again after a few very annoying weeks.

So far I’ve had no issues with mine for about a month now. I went to restrictions and made sure to allow CarPlay which was already checked off so I tried something else. I disconnected my phone from CarPlay and reconnected, had the same issue. Then Unpaired my phone from car and reconnected it, had the same issue still. Went to Face ID & Passcode and made sure USB Accessories was turned on because it was initially off. And that step I believe was what actually made it fully work. So I’ve gone a month since I last replied and it’s worked smoothly. If it happens again I will do full phone restart and head unit. I’m hoping I don’t have to though.

I’ve been having issues since day one. I have the 2021 Honda CR-V hybrid tour edition and max pro iPhone. Now my Honda thinks it’s connected to my phone through car play when it isn’t so I cannot even connect to my Bluetooth or usb because it says it’s connected to the car play, but yet when I do connect it, it will not work. It’s super frustrating and eventually it just fixes itself.

My wife had a similar issue with her 2019 Honda Accord. Apple CarPlay worked with no issues for over a year, then the car refused to identify that a CarPlay compatible device was connected (via USB). We do every troubleshooting step we could find (resetting, updating car software, forgetting device and car, Siri on/off, etc).

Installed HondaLink app on the phone, and opened it up, then the car immedicably identified the phone as a CarPlay device and automatically started CarPlay. She hasnt had a issue since, and has not needed to reopen the HondaLink app to get CarPlay to work since; it just works automatically again, as it is supposed to and used to.

Same issues. 2021 CRV Hybrid. Disconnects, goes to black screen, usually won’t reconnect without rebooting head unit and/ or iPhone. Happens with my iPhone 11 and wife’s XR.

Have taken to dealer multiple times to troubleshoot and update the firmware on the head unit. Last time I talked with them they indicated that Honda had acknowledged the issue. No ETA on resolution, however.

NEVER happens with Alpine unit in other vehicle. Hasn’t happened with rental cars or fleet vehicles that have CarPlay. This is a Honda issue.

I have a 2021 Civic Touring and my problems started after loading 14.4 on my IPhone X. After checking everything out (Cables, Settings, Pairings, ……….) I replaced the phone with a 12 Max Pro and the same thing!! Honda/Apple (👉🏻/👈🏻) I have tried my phone on about every other make of vehicle with Car Play and I am Absolutely Astonished that I have NOT had a single issue!! (Well Played Apple!!) I currently drive down the road and when it drops out of Car Play I reach down and unplug then replace the USB cable in the console and it works again for an unspecified amount of time. Honda needs to PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR ASSES AND GET THIS REMEDIED ASAP!!

Have the same issue with a Honda CRV 2019. Took it to a Honda dealer and they said the issue is with the Apple IOS software. Apparently, Apple releases security updates without telling Honda and after a few days, it drops the Car Play connection. It seems that Apple doesn't speak to Honda or other dealers and coordinate with them. To test this theory, I used my other phone which is an Android on the same Honda, running Car Play, and the Android works fine, even when the iPhone drops the connection. I field tested this and in the following 5 weeks, the iPhone Carplay was dropped 10 times while the Android, which was connected to the same car at the same time, never dropped once. The issue is clearly Apple IOS.

When I spoke with the Apple Store about this they were very unhelpful and kept saying the issue is with Honda. I called Apple support and they stand by the same comment, although they cannot explain why the Android phone keeps working.

The issue is therefore with Apple but Apple could care less.
